Getting to know my University of Central Lancashire classmates in the Journalism Innovation and Leadership programme has been one of the highlights of 2023.This photograph from Cape Town doesn't include the entire class and it certainly isn't reflective of the broad JIL community nurtured by François Nel, PhD.There is something very special about this postgraduate programme and I feel so lucky to have participated with such an incredible bunch of humans. Here's to more adventures, both personal and professional, in 2024!

Both the New York Times and the Boston Globe are running series where the storytellers are teens. For the NYT it's 13-year-olds; for the Boston Globe it's 13 to 19-year-olds. Each outlet's work looks gorgeous on mobile, but that's only part of the story.I'm reading their stories and it takes me back... some emotions are timeless...but simultaneously I'm aware that the lived experience of these young people is radically different from mine - from gun violence in US schools to growing up with, and on, social media and instant messaging. It's a reminder, for me, to pay attention to these young voices - what matters to them and what hurts them - and to remember that navigating adolescence was challenge enough without doing it online. Check out these articulate young people and what they have to teach us:https://lnkd.in/eZbt5fXNhttps://lnkd.in/eiZR7Jak

This course - and the people you will meet and learn from - is a wonder. It's equal parts challenging and rewarding and if you take my advice and sign up there will admittedly be the occasional day when you curse me... but the rest of the time you'll thank me
