Background[]

Personality[]

Poseidon is depicted as a very mature, yet cautious individual. It is heavily implied that in the past, he was a destructive and aloof, as evidenced with his past history with Medusa. Since then, he has since become aware of his actions and shows genuine care for the likes of Sally Jackson and their son Percy, being very supportive of both of them and offering as much advice as he can for them. While he can be just as prideful as the other gods, his love for his son overcomes this, as he puts his own life on the line for him.

Physical appearance[]

Poseidon is depicted as and older man with reddish hair who dresses in casual beach clothing. He also has a necklace with a small sea shell attached to it.

Powers and abilities[]

Poseidon has control over all of the oceans in the world and can apparently also communicate with ocean wildlife as well. His main weapon is a trident that functions similarly to his son's weapon.

Role in the series[]

The Lightning Thief[]

Poseidon is one of the many gods that hail from Mount Olympus and, much like them, has had a history of debauchery. He fathered the child Procrustes, who was later placed to guard the Underworld, and had a questionable relationship with Medusa that resulted in her getting cursed in the state that she's in. Poseidon eventually calmed down when he met Sally Jackson, whom he saw much hope in, and together had Percy. Due to his godly duties, Poseidon could not be there for him, but apparently kept a close eye on him as he realized that he was destined for greatness. When Sally was considering sending Percy to Camp Half-Blood, Poseidon convinced her to continue raising him in the mortal world as long as possible, so that he knew what it was like being human.

Poseidon was later accused by his own brother Zeus of having stolen his Master Bolt, or rather Percy was accused of having stolen it. Denying it, the two opted to wage war on one another, should the Bolt not be brought back. While Percy was willing to go and find it, he was doing it to save Sally, not his father. Despite this, Poseidon kept watch over Percy and even sent a Nereid to come and aid him in St. Louis and Santa Monica.

When Percy finally returned the Master Bolt to Zeus at Mount Olympus, he still insisted on the war. Zeus was about to smite Percy for his rebelliousness, but Poseidon arrived to surrender the war, saving his son from his wrath. Poseidon finally was able to speak to Percy and told him how proud he was of him. When Percy asked him if he still loved Sally, Poseidon could not bring up a concrete answer and sent him back to Earth to look after her.

Trivia[]

  • Prior to Toby Stephens playing him, Poseidon was played by Kevin McKidd in the live action film and Ryan Knowles (who also played Hades, Chiron, Medusa, and Kronos) in the Broadway musical.
