How does a two wire irrigation system work? ›

2-wire irrigation systems are exactly what they sound like. These systems use two separate wires that travel from a central controller to a valve. From this point, the range can be extended by creating a daisy chain with various amounts of valves. This allows the length to be nearly unlimited.

Rain Bird manufactures its own 24- volt solenoids and they are a highly efficient, low power consuming variety.

The common wire is usually white in color and runs from your controller to your master cylinder and then to each of the other valves on your irrigation system in turn. If something happens to cut your common wire, then every valve after the cut will fail to turn on when activated.

Get a piece of PVC long enough to go under the walk, glue a slip-female thread adapter to one end and attach a hose. On the other end glue a slip-male thread adapter and connect a Jet Spray Nozzle (available at most home improvement and home & garden retailers).

AC volts (VAC) - Alternating Current, this is household voltage. Most irrigation solenoids operate on AC voltage. Rain Bird voltage specifications are 117 VAC ± 10% (105 - 129) volts.

One distinct advantage to 2-wire technology is its expandability. If a new section of irrigation needs to be added to an existing 2-wire system, the path can be tapped into and new irrigation can be added.

In 2-Wire Control, a maintained contact closure causes the drive to run. When this same contact is opened, the drive will stop. In 3-Wire Control, a momentary contact closure causes the drive to run. The drive runs until a separate, normally closed contact, is momentarily opened.
