Summary of Duties:

WSU Tri-Cities Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is funded with federal funds by the Department of Education whose purpose is to increase the number of low-income and underrepresented students who graduate from high school and successfully complete post-secondary education.

The Student Achievement Specialist (SAS) has responsibility for increasing GEAR UP students’ engagement in their education, positive academic behaviors, family connection to critical school based information, post-secondary access support for students and families.

Duties include, but are not limited to: providing family outreach and education on college readiness, student and academic support services to include student advising, assessing participant’s needs and creating individual action plans. The Student Achievement Specialist (SAS) will provide student mentoring and will monitor and collect student data for assessment and reporting requirements. Will work closely with school personnel and community partners and participate in after school, evening and weekend activities.

This is a temporary, 30 hours per week, 12 month position with a work location in Mabton, WA.


Required Qualifications:

  • Positions require a Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of professional work experience in student services or related education/experience. A Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for one (1) year of professional work experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year‐for‐year basis.

  • Two (2) years of experience providing instruction or direct outreach services to students and/or working with parents in individual or group setting.

  • Proficiency in the use of computers, Google Suite, and MS Office software programs Excel, Outlook, Word.

  • Willingness and ability to travel overnight and work a flexible schedule, including frequent nights and weekends.

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced

Dr. Lisa Guerrerowas recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.

Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning.
