BLT Pasta Salad | Swanky Recipes (1)

BLT Pasta Salad brings back memories of summer potlucks with family. It’s served cold and it’s refreshing during the hot summer months. I love the combination of crisp green lettuce with juicy cherry tomatoes, crunchy bacon, and cold pasta. I often refer to this summer salad as my bacon pasta because it’s loaded with all my favorite summer potluck recipe ingredients.

Since it’s the first grill of the season, I want it to be special. I’ve been waiting for this day for months. If you like classic summer side dish recipes with a twist, then you’ll love this pasta salad side dish. It has incredible flavor and tastes just like a BLT sandwich that we’ve all come to love.

This time of year I love to hit up visit a few local farmer markets. I stock up on anything that is in season and store in the refrigerator then plan meals around each hull. What I dislike the most about stocking up on fresh fruits and vegetables is that some of it does go bad pretty quickly.

It’s a constant struggle to finish everything before it spoils. Often, I’ll make a summertime pasta salad with fresh summer produce to use up all those fresh garden vegetables.

Fresh vegetables and fruit that sit on the counter rot pretty quickly because of the humidity. This past week I started using Rubbermaid® Freshworks™ Produce Saverstorage containers to help keep the produce fresher for longer.

What I love about these storage containers is that produce lasts three times as long as traditional stored fruits and vegetables. Rubbermaid® FreshWorks™ Produce Saver is a brand new food storage container that uses revolutionary FreshVent™ technology to keep produce fresher up to 80% longer (when compared to store packaging). The containers are BPA free and dishwasher safe which makes clean up that much easier.

Rubbermaid® Freshworks™ Produce Saver uses Revolutionary FreshVent™ Technology which is a patented membrane that naturally regulates the flow of O2 and CO2 to create the optimal environment to keep your produce nearly as fresh as the day it was picked.

With spring in full swing, you’ll want to make afunand flavorful dish that are perfect for barbecues. This ridiculously easy pasta with bacon BLT Pasta Salad is perfect as an appetizer, side-dish, or even a main dish.

What are some of your favorite picnic dishes to make this time of year?

Looks really yummy, planning on making it. But question, what do you do with the second tablespoon of olive oil? Did I miss something? Thanks for the great recipe!

    1. I usually put about a tablespoon or less of olive oil in the pasta water while it cooks to prevent the noodles from sticking to each other and getting soggy.

FAQs

Should you let pasta cool before making pasta salad? ›

My Best Pasta Salad Tips

I find that the higher time range listed on box instructions is usually just about right for pasta salad. Let your pasta cool completely before tossing it with the other ingredients. If it's still warm, the hot pasta will start to cook and wilt the veggies.

How do you make pasta salad not soggy? ›

Since it's not being served hot or with sauce, the pasta benefits from an extra minute of cooking, but don't let it get mushy. → Follow this tip: For a well-cooked pasta salad, plan to cook the pasta until just past al dente. Adding an extra minute or so of cook time will keep the pasta soft while it cools.

Why does pasta salad taste better the next day? ›

The pasta, vegetables, and cheeses get time to absorb the dressing and take on additional flavor. They absorb the seasoning from the dressing, ensuring every bite is as flavorful as possible.

How do you keep macaroni salad from getting watery? ›

I make mine and then let it cool in the fridge with the lid off for a few hours. That usually lets the excess water evaporate off and lets the mayo/spices/veggies/pasta/tuna/whatever mix together and absorb with minimal mayo. After a few hours you can add more mayo if needed. Good Luck!

Should you rinse pasta in cold water for pasta salad? ›

The starch in the water is what helps the sauce adhere to your pasta. The only time you should ever rinse your pasta is when you are going to use it in a cold dish like a pasta salad or when you are not going to use it immediately. In those cases, rinsing the pasta helps to stop the cooking process.

Why does my pasta salad taste weird? ›

Vinegar and other acidic ingredients do strange things to the flavor of pasta when used in salad-level amounts. Ever notice an irritating acerbic aftertaste just about every time you've eaten pasta salad? That's the vinegar announcing itself, and it's not pleasant.

Is it best to make pasta salad the day before? ›

For storing: After I make this pasta salad, whether making it ahead or storing leftovers, I just pop it in the fridge and it will keep for 2-3 days. For making ahead: I love to make pasta salad 12-24 hours ahead of time. This gives it time to absorb the dressing but not get mushy!

Why does my pasta salad taste bland? ›

Not Using Enough Salt For Cooking Pasta That's Served Cold

Fix: “Seawater” salty will do you right every time! Cold pasta salad recipes wow with a 1:2:4 ratio: one pound pasta, two tablespoons salt, and four quarts water. Salt is your ride-or-die seasoning and bland annihilator.

When should you throw out pasta salad? ›

But how long, exactly, is that pasta salad going to last? The majority of pasta salads will last between three to five days in the refrigerator. This is provided you are storing the salad properly, in an airtight container so as to prevent any harmful bacteria from growing in your salad.

Why do salads always taste better in restaurants? ›

Restaurants use really good ingredients.

Your ingredients can decide whether your salad turns out average or extraordinary, Jamie Simpson, executive chef liaison at The Chef's Garden, told Allrecipes. "Restaurant-quality salads start with restaurant-quality ingredients," he said.

How do you moisten pasta salad? ›

Be sure to use enough mayonnaise or dressing to thoroughly coat the noodles. It's going to look like too much when you first make it, but the pasta does absorb some of it as it chills. If your leftovers seem a bit dry after a day or two, simply stir in a little more dressing or mayo to liven them back up!

Should you let pasta cool before adding mayo? ›

While oil-based dressings can be applied even to hot pasta, make sure to let the pasta cool to a warm temperature before mixing in a mayo-based one. Mayonnaise is susceptible to separating, but it can be warmed as long as it's not overheated.

Should you rinse pasta after cooking for macaroni salad? ›

When you're making cold pasta salads, it's helpful to rinse your cooked pasta because it's going to lower the temperature of the pasta, which is ideal given that it's going to be served chilled — often alongside other cool and/or raw ingredients.

What does adding vinegar to pasta water do? ›

If you think you have alkaline water, here's a quick fix: Add 2 teaspoons of lemon juice or white vinegar to 4 quarts of pasta water. This will help prevent your pasta from sticking without affecting its flavor. ACIDIC SOLUTION: Add vinegar or lemon juice to prevent pasta from sticking in alkaline water.

Running your noodles under cold water does indeed have the desired effect, but this method can also lead to some less-than-creamy pasta dishes. Instead of this technique, try moving your cooked plain pasta onto a sheet tray and then letting it cool for about 30 minutes (via All Recipes).

Should you let pasta cool down before you put it in the fridge? ›

Allow cooked pasta to cool slightly. It can then be stored in airtight containers (from $5, The Container Store) in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days. Again, store pasta and sauce separately, if possible. To reheat, drop the pasta in boiling water for just a few seconds; drain.

Should you leave pasta to cool? ›

After about 8 mins of boiling carefully fish a piece or strand of pasta out of the pan, allow it to cool and taste it. If it's ready take the pasta off the heat straight away, if not give it another minute then test again.

How long should you leave pasta to cool? ›

Generally, it takes around 10-15 minutes for spaghetti to cool down to a safe eating temperature. However, if you want to cool it down more quickly, you can run cold water over the spaghetti in a colander or transfer it to a shallow dish and place it in the refrigerator for a few minutes.
